It may not be every girl’s dream, but Hannah Dawson loves nothing more than working under the hood of a car. After making the decision that a classroom setting wasn’t for her, the Otago Polytechnic student enrolled to study a Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3).
“I’ve always been a fan of cars, especially Holdens! I much prefer to be working hands-on, so I thought I’d try my hand learning about cars,” says Hannah.
The 17-year old has had no problems adjusting to an environment that typically attracts males. “It doesn’t really bother me. It’s great working with the guys and we help each other out as much as we can. We just joke around have a laugh. It’s a lot of fun!”
A typical day for Hannah would include working in the garage, completing assessments on running engines, and welding.
"The tutors are really good. The guys don’t tend to ask as many questions, so I get a lot of one-on-one time with my teachers."
The Automotive programme also runs a mechanical workshop, where students gain experience working with clients and servicing cars.
"We have actual customers, so it’s a very satisfying feeling knowing what’s wrong with their car and fixing it for them. I couldn't tell you about cars at the beginning of the programme, but now I have so much confidence."
After completing her qualification, Hannah plans to get an apprenticeship and become a fully qualified mechanic. "I think customers will appreciate a female mechanic. We tend to pay more attention to detail!"
As for those contemplating studying a trade, Hannah has some useful advice. "I would say go for it, give it hell and don’t listen to anyone else. That’s what I did and I’m happy as Larry."
