Suggested Process

  • Read the questions several times very carefully.  Look at the elements(s) and performance criteria that relate to the questions.
  • Review the necessary information by reading quickly through the suggested chapter(s) in the textbook(s)/section of your notes.  Highlight information that seems relevant for answering the questions on your assignment.
  • Read through the information again slowly and carefully making some summary notes of the parts that will help you to answer the questions.
  • Read the questions again.
  • Read the notes that you've made.
  • Put these notes into your own words.  Imagine that a friend wants you to tell them what you have just learned.  Look up at the wall and explain out loud what you've just read and noted down.
  • Where appropriate, give examples to illustrate your answers.  The lecturer can only mark what you write - s/he can't see inside your head.
  • Write your answers.  This is your first draft.
  • If possible, leave your assignment for a day or overnight.  When you come back to it you'll be able to see more easily where the problems are.
  • Read through your answers - read them aloud, making sure you read every word carefully.  Do your sentences make sense?  Are they complete?  Check your spelling - use the spellchecker and a dictionary.  Some of the technical terms may not be in a standard dictionary - check your workbook, textbook and specialist dictionaries.  (This is the editing and proofreading process and it is very important.)
  • Finally, read the questions again and then your answers.  Check that you've answered each question as fully as you can.  Have you explained any terms that you've used?  Have you given examples of general concepts?
  • Hand the assignment in on time.
