The Certificate in English and Engineering programme (CEE) began in 2004 as a pilot programme at the request of Kanazawa Technical College (KTC).
The programme gives students the opportunity to learn engineering terminology and skills in English as well as specific English learning outcomes in an English language environment.
It is the only private programme in Japan that the Japanese Ministry of Education allows to send students abroad for more than six months and still be eligible to fit back into the education system on their return.
Students arrive in their year three of their five-year Kanazawa Technical College Engineering programme and complete their year three at Otago Polytechnic, so that they can then enter year four of their Kanazawa Technical College Engineering Programme.
After completing their fifth year students will be eligible to proceed into a degree course in the Kanazawa Institute of Technology – a fully accredited private technical university which is also Japan's largest institution of higher education specialising in engineering and technology.
English for specific purposes will be taught before each mainstream engineering related class in order to provide support for students.
Students will be learning the same content in the English specific purposes class as the following engineering class but structured in a way that would be understood more effectively by a second language learner.
The English for specific purposes classes will decrease as the year progresses as a result of students understanding more of the engineering terminology and skills in mainstream classes.
