While teaching diversional therapy students at Otago Polytechnic I became aware of the lack of ongoing educational opportunities for people already trained as diversional therapists. As a result, a set of twelve diversional therapy distance based education support packages were developed to meet diversional therapists ongoing educational needs. The primary purpose of my master’s research was to evaluate the value of these education packages from the participants’ perspective. The study utilised descriptive qualitative inquiry and the data collection methods included a questionnaire and a focus group. The results indicated there were a variety of positive outcomes for participants in completing the education packages. Participants expanded their knowledge of the range of suitable activities for their client group and gained knowledge about the value of activities for older people. The main affective responses of completing the packages were the feelings of inspiration and validation. Some participants experienced a change in attitude and a high number reported making a change to their everyday practice.

A further purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of educational theory in the design of the packages. Results indicated that the structure of the packages which provided opportunities to make connections between new learning and previous knowledge and experiences was a vital part of their success. A further strategy that enabled the participants to apply the learning to their own context (clients and workplace) was also essential in the success of this distance educational experience.
