Otago Polytechnic’s School of Midwifery is recognised as a leader in midwifery education. We continuously strive to uphold the highest standards of theoretical knowledge and clinical excellence. And that’s important, because there are few careers that have the potential to be as rewarding, demanding and indeed essential as midwifery. The healthcare industry world-wide is crying out for professional and caring people, and midwifery is no exception. Indeed there is currently a shortage of midwives in New Zealand, both in rural areas and in main centres like Auckland, Wellington and Invercargill. Our supportive and caring environment and commitment to producing highly-skilled midwives means your choice to study at Otago Polytechnic could be one of the smartest decisions you ever make!
Otago Polytechnic established the first three-year bachelor’s degree in midwifery in the world, and then the first postgraduate midwifery programme in New Zealand to be delivered at a polytechnic. Not willing to rest on their laurels the staff in the School of Midwifery embarked on an ambitious project in partnership with their midwifery colleagues at CPIT. Together they have developed an entirely new Bachelor of Midwifery programme that is jointly owned and is being delivered from 2009. This innovative programme utilises a blend of face to face learning, online learning and practical’ hands on’ learning and it enables midwifery students to access the majority of the programme from their homes, wherever they live. What hasn’t changed is that our programmes continue to be designed, delivered and reviewed by midwives, for midwives. That means we’ll always be at the forefront of our field, and our graduates will always be the best prepared to enter roles in lead midwifery care or core midwifery.
Midwives, women, students, educators and graduates are invited to explore our new website, Midwifery Junction. This website is owned by Otago Polytechnic and CPIT Schools of Midwifery and has been established as a mechanism for communication and interaction. This is the place to go for everything you want to know about our midwifery programmes. Click on the link below to explore Midwifery Junction and to find out more about our Bachelor of Midwifery programme.
Our highly-regarded postgraduate programmes assist experienced midwives to develop their midwifery practice careers or move into education, research, policy or management. And although it’s possible to study full-time, we recognise that most midwives want to work and learn. Therefore our courses are designed for part-time study and are mostly delivered online with web-based conference tutorials.
Applicants for the Bachelor of Midwifery must complete the Otago Polytechnic Application/Enrolment form, together with the Bachelor of Midwifery Application Information Document, and arrange for two Referee Reports to be completed for their application to be considered.
