The School of Design is located over a number of areas on the Polytechnic campus. It houses a number of computer labs and workshops spaces, clean areas and studios for all areas - Communcation, Fashion, Interiors, Product and Creative Studies.
More specifically the School of Fashion has its own purpose-fit building in order to cater to the increasing number of staff and students. It contains studio and production suites for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students. The building also contains a CAD suite and textile studios and the parking lot next door hosts the annual Collections exhibition.
Students will also have access to the newly established Product Development Centre, based at the Polytechnic. The facility contains equipment including a five-axis router, 3D printer and textile printer and will soon include a water jet cutter and roto-moulder.
Students also have the opportunity to undertake paid work through newSplash studio while they study with us. The studio was established with the Otago Institute of Design to offer School fo Design students the experience of working with real clients with the support of staff. There is a large format printer within the studio which can print and cut vinyl and print large format graphics on a variety of media.
The Otago Polytechnic’s Bill Robertson Library caters to schools including Design and Art and has over 500 design-related publications plus subscriptions to national and international magazines. Students and staff also have access to the University of Otago library allowing access to over 1 million items.
