The Bachelor of Design (Product) aims to equip students with the tools, techniques and competence, required to work in their chosen career path within the extremely broad field of professional design. The whole model is cognisant of the fact that the design business and industry is becoming more complex and collaborative. Designers need to be broad based and with some understanding of other specialisations to be able to proactively respond to our society. Product designers need most of all to understand user and market needs to create new products or redesigning existing ones, applying their technical knowledge and conceptual skills to achieve the goal of sustainable product.
We arm our design students with a broad base knowledge’s, from the technical, practical, and conceptual skills, to fulfil the cultural, ecologic and economic implications of their role as a designer. Through, methods, techniques, and processes of design-based projects, industry relevance and by building your confidence and own design identity.
Our department houses excellent workshop facilities, up to date CAD suites, year group studios, a gallery space and the new Product Development Centre (PDC).The PDC is especially unique of computer controlled prototyping equipment such as water and laser cutters, 3D printers and a 5- axis router machine will be accessible to you, and to design-enabled businesses throughout Otago and New Zealand.
Product also has a strong relationship with Evolver.
