Sustainable Tourism Advisors

The Centre manages two of the nine ‘Sustainable Tourism Advisors in Regions’ (STAR) programmes that are run throughout the country in partnership with the Ministry for Tourism. The aim is to help operators improve business sustainability and ensure more tourism operators visibly deliver on New Zealand 100% Pure brand promise.

These programmes are the Queenstown Lakes Sustainable Business Programme and the Central Otago Make a Difference Programme. Project managers Sharon Schindler and Ella Lawton respectively work with businesses both individually and collectively to meet them where they are at with their ‘sustainability goals’. Whereby some businesses have the sights set on achieving Qualmark Green for Responsible Tourism Operators, whilst others choose a holistic approach by using a systems thinking framework, the 'Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development'.

Tourism Central Otago

The World of Difference has become a pivotal brand for Central Otago tourism and products. The Council through the Regional Tourism Authority, endorsed an approach of Destination Management. This allows the many small communities in Central to work together whilst maintaining their own identify.

Council has endorsed a destination management approach for Central Otago.  Destination management is essentially about communities and cross agency co-operation in areas of planning and environmental management, provision of visitor information centres, management of infrastructure, marketing and site management.  Because the tourism industry is complex, involving a mixture of private companies, local and central government and communities, there is a need to build and maintain effective working partnerships between these players if a sustainable future is to be achieved.  The notion of managing a destination calls for a whole-of-community approach.

As part of a destination management approach looking at what other successful tourism destinations have done and the way they do business is important.
