Painting today

A concentration on contemporary art production is the key in Painting. While it encourages investigations into the discoveries and methodologies of recent centuries, its focus is on developing the student’s work so that it is relevant to today’s society and to international and New Zealand art practice.

Each stage of the Bachelor of Visual Arts and the Diploma in Arts (Painting) courses present an organised and measured understanding of both historical and current art techniques, theories and approaches available to the artist today.

The courses prepare students for involvement in the professional art sphere at a number of levels. They provide them with the knowledge to produce works for exhibition with a sound basis in chosen techniques, backed up by an understanding of art history and related theories, which facilitate rigour, self-criticism and confidence.
