Anita DeSoto is a Lecturer in Drawing and graduated with her Master of Fine Arts at the Dunedin School of Art in 2003
She has been exhibiting nationally for the last 11 years.
Located within the Neo-Romantic, DeSoto’s paintings point to a recurring theme of perception colored by desire- nothing is quite what it might first seem. There is therefore an evocation of the uncanny, and continual playing off between the Heimlich and the Unheimlich . Her life-size figures are often engaged in, or subject to, inexplicable activities.
In finely made works in oils on canvas, her paintings are in the Classical Renaissance brush technique. Anita Desoto is inspired by the Surrealist tradition, her work invoking the romantic Surrealism of artists such as Leonora Fini.
Anita is represented by Oedipus Rex Gallery, Auckland and Milford Gallery Dunedin. Her paintings can be veiwed on her website www.anitadesoto.co.nz
