Art at Risk: Copyright, Fair Dealings and Art in a digital age

Authors: Dr Susan Ballard and Pam McKinlay

This project investigated the digital image, and the associated delivery of copyright information in the tertiary classroom.  Art at risk provides a set of research resources and practical information for those working with digital images. It is a research collection of materials about Copyright, Fair Dealings and Art in a Digital Age and it has a New Zealand perspective.

Presented in two parts, Part One: Teacher’s Resource includes a set of posters that guide students through the decisions that need to be made when using digital images, and a set of case studies that include a record of real classroom situations and the decisions that were made regarding the risk of copyright infringement, understandings of appropriate ethical behaviors, and our critical and social contexts in New Zealand Aotearoa.

Part Two: Background Research documents, analyses, evaluates, considers and recommends methods for engaging with digital images whilst paying careful attention to the movements towards open source and creative commons approaches to digital media. Part Two includes extensive bibliographic data and a glossary for teachers keen to extend their knowledge of the complex frameworks of copyright.
