Message from Head of School

On behalf of the Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic I am happy to report that students are starting to arrive for the 2011 academic year. Staff members are looking forward to welcoming new and returning students during Orientation Day on Monday 14 February -- starting promptly at 9am in the Lecture Theatre P152 on the ground floor of the main ART building off Reigo Street. (There will be signs to show new students the way and a map of the School will be provided to make movement easy for newcomers.)

We look forward to meeting new students and to welcome back returning students as every single person who becomes part of our community adds value to our rich understanding of what the visual arts can say about our world.

Each of our studio areas contribute to the exciting mix of our Art School and students can choose where they feel most interested and challenged, while receiving the grounding necessary for 21st-century artists in the supportive disciplines of Art History & Theory and Drawing, subjects which prepare students for the challenging creative work to be done in the other studio areas.

I would like to thank in advance all staff and students who will continue to make the Dunedin School of Art an extra special place to be. This year – 2011 – is promising to be a great year for us with an enlarged student roll, a beautiful space in a new building to add to the spaciousness of the building which was completed in 2009, an enthusiastic and rested group of staff and many great events – exhibitions, seminars, parties -- scheduled to add to the normal timetable provided for students. I’m looking forward to meeting and re-meeting you all and in due course, also your family and friends, who are most welcome to attend the many public events which will be taking place at the Dunedin School of Art in 2011.

7 February 2011
