Bachelor of Visual Arts

The Bachelor of Visual Arts offers a faster movement into specialisation than is offered in the current Bachelor of Fine Arts. Students select from a range of subjects in their first semester and specialise in two of these in the second semester, moving to full specialisation in the second and third years.  The earlier specialisation has been designed in response to student and applicant feedback.

In addition, the degree teaches students how to become independent creative makers, thinkers and active agents in a local, national and global context. Through directed and independent learning, students will develop technical, academic and personal skills enabling them to pursue careers as independent artists and researchers within the realm of the creative industries, have transferable skills that enable to them to work in areas further afield, and be prepared for a lifetime of further learning.

Please note: The Bachelor of Visual Arts*(BVA) has been developed to commence in 2009. Should the BVA not be approved in time for delivery in 2009, all applicants will be invited to enrol in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Students currently enrolled in Otago Polytechnic’s BFA will be invited to transfer into this programme at the end of their second year of study, completing the BVA in their third year. Students who do not wish to transfer will complete their BFA in four years as per usual.
