Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)

This programme provides a pre-trade training qualification for those looking to take up apprenticeships and enter the building and construction industry.

It has a 50/50 mix of theory and practice, including eight weeks of on-job work experience, and includes a theory component of the National Certificate in Carpentry – the recognised standard for qualified carpenters.

Entry requirements

Entry to this programme is open, however a minimum of four years secondary education with 8 Level 2 credits in English and 8 Level 1 credits in Mathematics, unit standards in elementary contruction skills or equivalent qualifications or experience is preferred.

International Students: are generally not eligible to enter this programme and are subject to specific Immigration and Otago Polytechnic regulations.

International entry requirements

IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.5 (with no individual score less than 5.0).

Further study options

This programme covers the trade theory knowledge component of the National Certificate in Carpentry; during your apprenticeship you will complete the practical requirements. You can then undertake more advanced construction qualifications at Otago Polytechnic such as the National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) (Level 4) followed by the National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) (Level 5).

Applications due by: Applications are preferred on or before 31 October each year for February courses. For the mid-year course applications are preferred by 31 August. Applications received after 31 October or 31 August will be considered only if places are available.
