The Bachelor of Fine Arts provides a holistic education with Fine Arts as its focus. Graduates become highly competent practitioners of art and in the process gain transferable skills that enable them to work in a wide range of careers. You will study a number of core subjects that introduce you to a range of artistic disciplines and optional subjects that allow you to focus on a specialty area. The aim is to provide a balance between underlying knowledge and concepts and studio work.
You will be required to demonstrate your academic background, submit a portfolio of your visual work and you may be asked to take part in an interview in person or by telephone. To satisfy the entry requirements for admission to the first year of the degree programme you must:
Demonstrate appropriate ability in art and scholarship by submission of a portfolio,
Have completed five years at secondary school with successful completion of units of study in art,
OR
Hold 15 credits or more at Level 2 NCEA in English, Art History or similar subjects.
Mature Students:
Must demonstrate appropriate ability in art and scholarship through the submission of a portfolio and appropriate skills in literacy through the presentation of associated material such as samples of the applicant's own presentation of research.
All applicant submissions are viewed by a panel of academic staff and applicants are accepted on merit based on an evaluation of a portfolio of art practice and evidence of academic skills. Where the number of successful applicants exceeds places available, a waiting list will be kept and students are offered vacant places in waiting list order.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL):
Recognition of Prior Learning occurs through the
process of advanced entry. Where relevant, Humanities written papers from other tertiary degrees may be credited against equivalent BFA theory papers on evidence of an Academic Record and supporting course descriptors. A maximum of three theory papers may be credited; that is, a maximum of 36 out of 63 theory credits for the BFA degree may be accepted for RPL.. Note:Â RPL is not available for year four of the programme.
English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 6.0, with a score of at least 6.0 in all areas.
Otago Polytechnic offers postgraduate qualifications in this field: the Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts and the Master of Fine Arts.
Duration: Four years (Full-Time).
his programme is to be completed within a maximum of eight years where students are taking the programme full time and ten years for part time study. The time-frame is to maintain the currency of the degree.
