2008 Charity House Auction

This year’s Charity House Auction is set to raise funds for Dunedin’s most needy charities.

In 2007, the student-built Charity House Auction held by Otago Polytechnic, Metro Reality Ltd and a number of local businesses raised $100,000 for United Way to distribute amongst Dunedin’s charities.

Once again, carpentry students and supervisory staff have been hard at work completing a Charity House as part of their pre-trade carpentry certificate.

One of the students involved in building this year’s Charity House Adam Davidson says the experience taught him a lot of invaluable ‘hands-on’ skills.

“My group worked on the lounge and the kitchen. We built the frames and lined it with gib and did lots of the finishing work.

“It was really rewarding seeing what we had accomplished at the end of the job.”

This type of construction project is a vital part of ensuring that students have relevant, up-to-date skills and nothing could be more hands-on than actually building a house.

Money raised in this year’s Charity House Auction will be distributed by the South Dunedin Rotary. The funds have been earmarked for several local charities and to support two community projects in South Dunedin.

Adam feels “pretty good” about helping the community.

Through the support of local business and suppliers the charity house is a complete home package. It will be auctioned off complete with fresh paint, soft furnishings, floor coverings, a bedroom package, a heat pump and a complete kitchen.

Otago Polytechnic would like to take this opportunity to thank all their partners and supporters in the 2008 Charity House Auction:
