Design Steps Otago was established last year by the OID. The programme takes your company through a business design-audit process, through identifying current systems and improving product/service design with the goal of increasing bottom line revenue. Similar programmes, such as Better by Design have proven to be highly effective in assisting businesses in achieving desired growth for large New Zealand businesses. The OID’s goal, with the introduction of Design Steps, is to provide the same opportunity to smaller, growth-focused businesses within our region.
The Otago Institute of Design has secured the services of the D3 Team- a selected group of design audit specialists to deliver this programme. The team consists of Nigel Sharplin from InFact, Peter Roband from PHd3 and Matt McKendry from Deloitte. The D3 Team has been working for several years and now has a demonstrated track record in this arena.
Design Steps has four parts:
- Discovery
During the process of information collation, I am also able to assist as the Co-ordinator of the Programme as required. - On-site 1: Assessment Day
The team spends a full day on-site speaking with Directors, Key Staff, and Supplier and Client representatives.
The day starts with a short group session with the Directors, Staff and the D3 Team to make introductions and outline the daily agenda.
Next, the D3 Team works through a timetable of discussion meetings based on the Design Steps Audit Format. The usual practice is to begin the process with the business owners/directors. - On-site 2: Feedback and Planning Day
Prior to this session, the business leaders are provided with a detailed report on the assessment findings and recommendations (i.e., core strategies for enhancing business growth).
On the actual day, the D3 Team meets with the business owners/directors and key staff in the morning to provide an overview of the findings and to clarify any points regarding the information presented.
In the afternoon, the D3 Team takes the business leaders through the process of developing a plan to implement the indentified strategies to encourage growth. - Ongoing mentoring:
Dependent on the business’s current state and nature of the recommended strategies, a plan will be put in place for ongoing mentoring.
The Co-ordinator will remain in contact with the business after the process to ensure the desired outcomes have been met and tend to on unidentified supports are implemented as required.
