The Otago Institute of Design is one of New Zealand’s leading design-dedicated organisations. It brings together research, industry and education with innovation. Comprised of a range of projects, facilities and expertise, the Otago Institute of Design engages in all aspects of design-led initiatives for businesses and the public sector.

The Otago Institute of Design is a collaborative venture between the Otago Polytechnic School of Design and the University of Otago.

Education

Education is at the heart of the Otago Institute of Design. Design academics have always enjoyed a close relationship with industry and the Otago Institute of Design sees collaboration as key to its future.

Otago Polytechnic and University of Otago are conscious of maintaining graduate and post-graduate courses that are interesting, relevant, and continue to lead the way in the highly competitive national and international education scenes.

Innovation

Innovation is a term bandied about a lot. The act of innovation means to create something new or change; to be innovative is to be deemed ahead of the times. In business terms it can also mean improved effectiveness and therefore more profitability. So how can the Otago Institute of Design add innovation to what you do?

By working with your business or organisation and using design thinking, we can help develop unique solutions to solve problems or create opportunities. As Tim Brown, from IDEO says:

“Design thinking can be described as a discipline that uses the designer’s sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can convert into customer value and market opportunity.”

Research

Research is imperative for each and every company, business and organisation. It is also critical to the design process. At the Otago Institute of Design, we seek to expand the boundaries of thinking and doing through research. Within the OiD there are a number of ways to benefit from and engage in research – both through the Applied Design Research Centre, which will undertake all manner of projects from the ‘outside world’, and through our education programmes.
