School of Foundation Learning

Sustainability has been written into the revision of the Certificate in Foundation Studies (Levels 1 – 4).

The core competency 'sustainability' is manifest in the programme in three ways.

Firstly, a sustainable approach is applied to learning, meaning that the learners are acquiring skills they can apply in other contexts outside the classroom and thus sustain learning throughout their lives.

Secondly, by improving their literacy, language and numeracy skills, learners are better able to contribute meaningfully to society and can sustain ethical social values.

Finally, sustainability is used as a theme through which literacy, language and numeracy skills can be learned, allowing learners to become familiar with issues relating to sustainability and how they might affect their lives, such as energy types and usage, waste etc.

The principle tenet is that learners sustain learning beyond the programme and become aware of sustainable living as it applies to their own contexts.
