School of Applied Business

The School of Applied business is developing two specialties (short courses) for the Diploma in Applied Travel and Tourism. Both courses will be available in 2009.

The first 30 credit specialty is a generic Small Business Planning course, including sustainable business and triple bottom line accounting. This course requires students, potentially from all areas of the polytechnic or from industry, to plan and complete their own business plan.  Tourism students will be provided with a business concept to develop through the course. The course has been designed to act as a potential lead into further small business management courses being run either at the polytechnic or in industry.

The second 30 credit specialty is centred around the concept of sustainability.  This local course will be split into two papers. The first is an introduction to sustainable practice. The second paper will take students through the process and methods used to carry out a business audit for sustainability. It is hoped that these papers will be transferable into the planned Certificate in Sustainable Practice which in turn can be picked up by other programmes.
