IT Industry Showcase Launches Excite

Excite, Otago Polytechnic’s annual showcase of practical student projects and research, will launch on Thursday, with the Information Technology Industry Showcase.

The Showcase features the completed innovative project work of four teams of Bachelor of Information Technology students who have been working with clients ranging from Fonterra to the Otago Museum to the Forsyth Barr Stadium.  The project is generally the final and most demanding part of their final year, requiring the consolidation of a number of technical and communication skills in order to produce a viable product or service for a real-life client.

PocketStadium, a project from students Julian Robinson, Lisa Taylor and Hayden Parata  enhances the experience of stadium customers by providing them with exclusive features through their smart phone. It is tested and packaged ready for installation at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Felix McCoy is an educational multimedia application specifically designed to teach children about the New Zealand rocky shore life. Team members Kris Seque and Morgan Pickford have worked with client Portobello Marine Laboratory to develop the fun children’s game.

Students Phillip Bennett, Adam Frame and Perrin McKenzie have completed an interactive exhibit on marine navigation for the Discovery World Centre at the Otago Museum.

Team Innovation, comprised of Allen Kannewischer, James Bird Email and Alex Erdelyi have built a business application for Fonterra including an online ordering site to address the specific, complex needs of the business.

All of the projects have been successful and clients have been extremely pleased with the project work to date, explains Lesley Smith, Head of the School of Information Technology at Otago Polytechnic. The Industry Showcase coincides with the final presentation of each project to the client and panel comprised of academic staff and industry representatives.

Elements of some ongoing projects due for completion in 2011 will also be on display at the Showcase.

The Information Technology Industry Showcase will run from 5.30pm until 8pm on Thursday November 11.
