A fashion photography workshop, with Berlin Photographer Professor Ute Mahler was held in conjunction with the Zeitgeist becomes Form exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on the 5th and 6th of May this year. The collaboration was kindly sponsored by the Goethe Institut, Otago Polytechnic, DPAG and Ali McD Agency.
It involved students and some lecturers from the Otago Polytechnics Department of Design and School of Art notably the Fashion School (academic leader Margo Barton) and the Photography department (academic leader Max Oettli). The strategy was to make up teams of students from both schools and have them organise shoots on the appointed day in collaboration with models from the Ali McD Model agency. The workshop gave all participants a superb chance to work collaboratively with a very distinguished and lively international photographer.
The outcome was presented at the DPAG on the 7th, and the project was seen by all participants and outsiders as a resounding success.
A richly illustrated newspaper article appeared in the ODT (Jude Hathaway), and a DVD of the work is in preparation at the school of Fine Arts.
Fashion photography exhibition, curated by Max Oettli opened at the Blue Oyster Gallery, Moray Place, Dunedin, on July 1st and runs until 25 July.
This show is a small selection of photographs from the workshop organised by Ute Mahler of Berlin in conjunction with the Zeitgeist becomes Form exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
The exhibition is accompanied by the launching of a booklet Fash+ography compiled by Margo Barton and Simon Swale in the fashion department and sponsored by Photokina, George Street. The booklet will be available on order for the modest price of $10.
