Debbie Galdeman, BAM (Strategic Management)

Like many students at Capable NZ, Debbie Galdeman approached the organisation as a highly-experienced professional in her field. Her administrative and management skills had been developed as she moved from role to role within a large organisation, earning the respect of her employers and colleagues. However, when it came to taking the next step in her career, she discovered that something could be holding her back.

"I never really worried about getting a qualification earlier in my career, because I was growing in an organisation, moving though the company and being presented with a lot of challenges and experiences," Debbie explains. "But when I decided to move I found I missed out on a few jobs because I was competing against other candidates who in some instances held degrees."

Following discussions with the Otago Polytechnic careers advisor and a representative from Capable NZ, Debbie signed up to complete a Bachelor of Applied Management (Strategic Management) over one year, part-time by Assessment of Prior Learning.

"I've really got into the work, and I think that's because I'm discovering things I've known for a long time through working in different situations are actually relevant and supported by the theory I'm reading."

Debbie is about to move from her current job, as a Personal Assistant/Office Manager within the University of Otago Development & Alumni Relations Office to a new role within one of the faculties that will involve assisting the Director of Policy and Programmes and include research, project work and supervision.

"I think part of the reason that I got this new job was because I was working on my professional development" says Debbie. "Now, a young student that holds the same degree as I is not going to have anywhere near the level of insight I'm developing because they don't have that experience. The whole concept of Capable NZ is fantastic."
