Information Technology

Think outside the box. That’s the ethic at Otago Polytechnic’s School of Information Technology.

We hold to the philosophy that it’s not what’s going on inside a computer’s plastic container that is of greatest importance, but how this technology benefits those who are using it. Plus, we believe that computer technology is now a vital part of everyday life – from how washing machines operate to how running shoes are designed – and its possible uses are limitless!

Therefore, Otago Polytechnic IT programmes are all about encouraging students to inventive and creative, while making sure they have a solid grounding in all the technical and theoretical aspects of IT.

There are currently far more IT jobs out there than graduates. And employers are desperate for staff with a real-life understanding of what IT is all about. Our programmes are designed to be as career-focused and industry-friendly as possible. They are offered part-time or full-time. We can develop short courses on specialist topics to meet demand. And all of our degree students work on real-life projects for a range of businesses and organisations – meaning they all graduate with genuine industry experience on their CVs.

We prepare you for possible careers in:

  • Business computing
  • Technical support and repair roles
  • Hardware and electrotechnology
  • Software, database or web development
  • Systems design and analysis.

Your interests and career goals will determine which programme is best for you. And we ensure all students can begin studying IT, no matter what their previous education or existing level of computing experience.
